A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a device fitted to modern diesel vehicles exhaust system to reduce emissions and meet European emission standards. It works by catching Soot from the gasses of the exhaust while allowing the gasses run through the system.
Since 2009, the UK emissions standards for cars have established a requirement that all diesel cars must have a fitted Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). All diesel cars have a warning light for when the filter is not working correctly or is in need of maintenance. Though more often than not the light will come on to tell you that the DPF needs to regenerate and clean itself. Cleaning your DPF is much cheaper solution that replacing the part which is why we offer a cleaning service.
You can find instructions in the owner’s manual or you can follow our instructions below:
Do not proceed if your Engine Management Light is on.
- Ensure that your vehicle has enough fuel for a 30mile drive.
- Turn on as many electrical items as you can, Air conditioning, Lights, Heated rear window, radio etc. – This will help get your car to reach a high temperature faster.
- Once warm, Drive the car in any gear that allows you to maintain 2,000 RPM, in automatics you will need to select sport mode if possible and select the gear manually
- Drive the car at this speed until either the dpf light goes off or until you have covered at least 30 miles.
By following these guidelines, your DPF should be able to perform a self-clean or regenerate on its own. This method is also known as Passive Regeneration. It works by increasing the temperature in the filter and burning off soot and particles that have built up over use.
If you have found that the light has remained on or if you have other lights on such as the engine management light, then it is necessary to take your vehicle to a garage so that the problem can be diagnosed and repaired efficiently.
We can usually offer DPF Cleaning as a same-day service which normally takes about 2-3 hours, any further remedial work that is required will obviously take longer and is subject to parts availability but can be discussed at the time
From our garage in Stoke On Trent, we can identify the cause of your DPF becoming blocked and proceed with a DPF cleaning service. Using specialised cleaners, we can remove built up soot and restore your DPF to its original brand new condition.
Rest assured that when your DPF light comes on, it is more often than not just a sign that the DPF is becoming blocked. It can usually be fixed by allowing it to clean or regenerate.
We offer complete DPF Solution work on almost all vehicles that suffer from DPF. Diesel Particulate Filter’s are closely related to other engine components; they can check and attend to such areas if required for your peace of mind.
